My first 100 rides on the Peloton

Today, January 31, 2021, I celebrated my 100th ride on the Peloton bike. The first ride I took resulted in a 108 average output.

The 100th ride ended in 240. My highest was 245. Hopefully, I can get to my 200th ride. If that day comes, I hope to see a 300 on that average output.

For now, I will focus on ride 101.

Biggest takeaways from this journey:

— I still have plenty of growth to do. I’ve grown plenty, but plenty more is to be had.

— The value of peer support is through the roof. We are motivated by competition more than we realize. We have to harness this principle for optimal effect. Shout out to the #Holidaze challenge.

— To be a better (indoor) cyclist, you have to have strong legs. Meaning, you have to do exercises to build leg strength. Over the course of the next 100 rides, there will be infinitely more squats, lunges, step-ups, deadlifts, and barbell hip thrusts from my person.

— The key to riding power is in the saddle, not out the saddle. Spend more time sitting down if you want to build true power.

— I need to take more Power Zone courses. I did my FTP test last week, so I just started that training regimen. I feel this will pay massive dividends.

— Going from challenge to challenge is better than just picking rides and going.

— Use the Just Ride feature. You’ll eat up podcasts and audiobooks and burn off 500 calories before you realize it.

— Rest is relative. If you want to ride every day, do it. If you are tired and want to take a day or two or four off, do it. This is your journey. Own it.

— Recover, recover, recover. Use the yoga and stretch sessions liberally. This is the major key.

— Every time I’ve engaged in a meditation session, I’ve come out in a better mood. Take that for what you will.

— There are so many options in the Peloton app. Spend time diving in and experiencing them all. I’ve had the bike for a little over 4 months, and there is so much I haven’t tapped.

— This has been a fun trip. A lot of sweat, suffering, after-ride euphoria, doubting, and therapy done on that bike. This bike has become an unexpected friend in uncertain viral times.

— All this to say, an invaluable investment. A special appreciation to Marcus Robinson for putting me on, and for serving as a mentor in this path because he is killing it. Because of his consistent example, I’m too competitive to not get inspired and seek to do my best every time I saddle up.
